During
the work, I kept thinking of Ahmed Fakhry's words that
were written in his book about Baharia. He said that
he hoped that the tomb of the governor of Baharia, Zed-Khonsu-ef-ankh,
would be discovered. We know about this governor from
the temples of Ain-El-Medftela where he built chapels
with his brother to the Kings Apries and Ahmose II of
Dynasty 26. The chapels were found in 1900 by the German
scholar Georg Steindorff. In one of these chapels, Zed-Khonsu
is shown as the second priest and the third priest of
Amon. The governor is depicted equal in size to that
of the king, showing that he was an important man and
could be the second after the king. This is also why
we believe that he took the position of vizier. The
name of his father, Badi Isis, and his brother, Shepen-Khonsu,
who was a governor of Baharia, were also mentioned.
Thus the whole family lived in Baharia and should be
buried there. However, I never thought that the tomb
of Zed-Khonsu would be discovered.
Then, one week, later, when the tombs were consolidated
and the house of the poor lady was demolished, I entered
the tomb. When I entered the burial chamber, I saw a
very large anthropoid sarcophagus. I will never forget
that moment. The burial chamber was very small but a
beautiful sarcophagus was found inside. At that moment
of discovery, I felt as though arrows of fire were attacking
me. My eyes were closed, and I could not breath because
of bad smell. I looked into the room and discovered
a very thick yellow powder around the anthropoid sarcophagus.
I cold not walk and did not read the name of the owner.
I ran back out because of this smell.
We
brought masks for the workers who began to remove the
material. I found out that it was hematite, quarried
nearby in Baharia. But why this material was there,
I could not understand. Its function was unclear.
I could not wait to know the name of the owner of the
tomb. I went inside with the archaeologists, my assistant,
Mahmoud, Mansour and Tarek. We found a long line of
hieroglyphic inscriptions extending from the chest to
the end of the sarcophagus. We were in a hurry to clean
the surface and could hardly read the name Zed-Khonsu
ef-ankh. We all screamed and could not believe that
we had discovered what Fakhry had dreamed of discovering.
We also found all his titles as priest of Amoun and
other gods, including Isis. We found the goddess Isis
represented on the right side of the sarcophagus and
the god Osiris on the left; the same scene was even
shown on the back of the head.
I will never forget this moment all my life as an archeologist
because the excitement reached a peak. We finished our
work by the end of May, and as it started to be hot,
we decided to stop the excavation but we could smile
at the thought that the tombs of his brother, father
and mother still remained to be discovered. We will
resume excavation in October and I am sure that Baharia
will reveal many more secrets.
